About World Anvil
Some of us start with a character. Others with a map, a campaign, or a question that won’t leave us alone. World Anvil is a home for all those beginnings—and the worlds they become.
We make tools that help writers, gamemasters and worldbuilders give their ideas a place to grow.
Discover our storyOur beginnings
The year World Anvil went live.
World Anvil began with Janet Forbes and Dimitris R. Havlidis: a writer and a gamemaster who wanted a better home for their worlds. A place where characters, places and history could connect, and where an idea could become something you could actually explore.
The platform launched on October 25, 2017. Since then, it has grown to bring worldbuilding, novel writing and campaign management together, with a community of creators making it their own.
That original need still shapes what we build. Whether you’re preparing next week’s game, working on your first novel or developing a setting over many years, we want to help you spend more time creating and less time hunting for your notes.
The people behind the platform
World Anvil is made by a team of worldbuilders, writers, artists and developers. Stories and tabletop games are part of our lives, as well as our work.

What matters to us
Building a world is personal. It can hold years of ideas, a table’s shared adventures or a story you haven’t told anyone yet. We believe the tools around it should respect that.
Your characters, stories and settings remain yours. World Anvil does not claim ownership of your creative work. Read our copyright policy.
A meticulously planned history and a handful of notes for tonight’s session both have a place here. You choose how far to develop your world, and what to build next.
We want people to feel welcome asking questions, sharing work and learning from one another. Respect for fellow creators is part of our community etiquette.
A prompt can start a new story. A conversation can solve a stubborn problem. We make space for those moments through learning resources, community events and creative challenges.
Find your people
Behind every setting is someone who loves making things up. Our community brings together novelists, tabletop players, gamemasters, artists and people who worldbuild simply for the joy of it.
Join a conversation, try a writing challenge, or learn a new approach to your craft. You don’t need a finished world to take part—just a little curiosity.
