Ahoy, from the ionian sea.

This sea is located right between Italy and Greece as a part of the mediterranen sea. Here you can find it’s deepest point, endangered wildlife and a ton of old ship wrecks.

But what I’m here for is the night sky. It’s not only beautiful out at sea, without the light pollution, but there have been some tales about strange movements in the sky. So I set out to investigate them.

Day 1

Of course I did some research on my way to the port where I rented my sailboat. In ancient mythology the stars are seen as alive in one way or another. In greek myths there are a few beings getting turned into constellations.

Day 2

My boat is prepared to head out now. I’ve decided to travel solo, who knows what I’ll find out there. I want to disturb the quiet as little as possible.

Day 3

I have reached my destination. The ship is anchored in the middle of nowhere out at sea. I just wasn’t so lucky with the weather, it was cloudy yesterday evening and today, but I hope it clears up soon.

Day 4

The clouds disappeared over the day and I was able to get a great view of the milky way. It is truly breath taking to see so many stars in the sky.

Day 5

I was able to witness something extraordinary: constellations coming to life. I didn’t think it would actually happen, much less that I would be able to document it. But at around 5 AM I was startled by a sudden movement between the stars. I watched in awe as wings stretched and a body formed from the starlight. There above me was a pegasus soaring around the milky way. I didn’t dare to say a word. After taking a few photos I just watched them until the stars faded and so did they.

Day 6

Today is my last day at sea. After resting a good portion of the day I started to head back to port in the evening. I was hoping to see at least a tiny glimpse of another constellation. Luck seemed to be on my side, cause I did mange to see a glowing fin for a few seconds. I’m not sure if it belonged to cetus or piscis austrinus, they are pretty close together. It almost felt like the wanted to wave me goodbye.
