Conflicting Calendars, Thermodynamic Magic, & Chapter 9
Fellow Worldsmiths,
How often do we let magic be "hand-wavy," or gloss over the logistical nightmare of how different cultures actually measure time?
In Raven & Quill Issue 6, I dive deep into the mechanics of Aithyris to address both of these issues, and I wanted to share some of that forge-labor with this community.
The Clocks of the Five Seas
If you've ever looked at the historical mess of the Julian and Gregorian calendars and thought, "I should do that to my characters," you'll understand "The Lag".
The ancient Shandaryn calendar of my setting uses a perfect 351-day solar year. But humanity couldn't leave the math alone. The trade-focused Therysians anchored their New Year to the Spring Equinox , while the traditional Vesprians anchored theirs to the Winter Solstice. The result? A predictable annual overlap where one nation is technically a full year behind the other for three months and a week. You can read the full mechanical breakdown in Calendars & Timekeeping.
The Somatic Economy & Thermodynamic Magic
I also touch on the physics of the "Shadow". Instead of treating darkness as just "bad lighting," I built it as an active endothermic vacuum. Because the medium of the Shadow is acoustically dead , moving a living soul through it creates intense "Friction of Identity". Magic isn't free; it's a zero-sum thermodynamic exchange.
The issue also features a personal journal entry about a recent lecture I attended, a fumbled question about entropy, and why the physical "connectedness" of the universe matters so much to the themes of my story.

Hey Peeps!
So I've finally decided to share something I've been working on for over a year now. I started writing this novel ages ago but put it aside, and now that I've built out so much more of my world (Eluvemar), I've gone back to do a proper re-edit. Fingers crossed someone here enjoys it!
Starfire: Book One of The Starless Prophecy Trilogy
She fell through fire and lightning, from a world of ash into one where stars still burn. Sera wakes in the Harrowing Grounds with nothing: no name, no House, no understanding of how she came to be here. Only the stranger's last words echo in her skull: survive. And the certainty that this place is wrong in ways she cannot yet name.
The Vylerrian Institute of Thaumaturgical Arts takes her in, not knowing she was never meant to be their student. They train her. Test her. Welcome to Week 7 of the Saga!
Raven & Quill Issue #7: The Inkwell is live alongside Chapter 5: A Key of Scars. We return to Qianna to peel back the layers of her past.
But the real story this week is about the deep rabbit hole of cartography.
I confess: the map nerd in me took over. I realized the current satellite imagery for Vespria wasn't enough to satisfy the vision. So, instead of just writing, I spent the week rebuilding the Vesprian realms from the ground up in Photoshop to prepare for a massive InDesign overhaul.

We are kicking off 2026 with a fresh start: Raven & Quill, Volume 2, Issue #1 is live alongside Chapter 4: The Rising Tide .

Hello everybody!
I'm not feeling the best due to being under the weather, but I did want to post another drawing of mine despite that. For this post, I decided to do something of a "blast from the past" type. This is one of my many original characters that I created many years ago. I was transitioning from high school to attending a community college when I drew this. I wanted to experiment with doing a full body drawing. This oc will appear in my world of Arktoria at some point, although there will be major changes to his overall design.

I created this piece recently as I wanted to update an older piece I did while working at a community college. Mainly targeting how a cloak would wrap on a character based on their kind (This was also partly inspired by the "Dynasty of Evil" cover of the Darth Bane Saga of Star Wars books).

Day 5 of Novelember
Current Word Total: 8,771 words!
I have been working hard to get back into writing and I think this month has paid off. For over a year I have been stuck in a rut, unable to write more than a few sentences or even a paragraph. Now, I have eight chapters written and another on the way.
However, I have only posted five chapters here as I keep finding plot holes as I discover things along the way and need to tie them up before I lose my mind. Still, I am chugging along and spewing out words like a fire extinguisher dousing the flames of writer's block!
Bound by Silver is the first novel of the Silver Chronicles, and at least eight books have been planned out. Below is the summary of the book and the link to it.
Astaroth Angelus is the heir of the most powerful dragonthorn in existence, King Zadicus. His lifestyle congregates around money, fame, blood, and maspet auctions. It's only when the son of a werewolf Alpha is being sold at one of the many maspet auctions does Astaroth's life turn upside down.
Kane Sullivan, the heir to the Hollow Claw Pack, finds himself being sold off at a maspet auction. He thinks his worst fears are coming to life....oh, how he's wrong. The moment Kane finds himself being bought by Prince Dante Angelus, he learns that perhaps not all dragonthorns are heartless.
Kane and Astaroth make the most awkward match among their respected species, but can they do whatever it takes to stay together? With in being weeks away from Astaroth's royal marriage to Lady Morgana, it's a race against time for the fated couple to seal their love into the history of their world.

Something new from me! After the Elves vs. Aliens showdown, I was reading the Discord chat, and Team Alien—specifically Demon Grey—was talking about using aliens for creativity. While I don’t yet have a full sci-fi or alien world, I wanted to explore a specific lens for the story; sometimes that sparks an idea.
I’ve put together a short outline, and here’s my first installment of Starlit Observations! It will be a duet-style tale, following Ven Solari, a Zephri observer, as he begins watching a human woman, Subject 7.3.9.2343—someone he calls Wildflower. What starts as a mission of observation soon becomes something far more personal.
Creative experiments make me happy, and who knows—maybe this will help me fully develop that other sci-fi setting I’ve been dreaming about. I hope you enjoy seeing where this story goes!

I’m having a love-hate relationship with WA right now, and I finally came to terms that I just don’t understand certain features needed to thrive.
I’ll be honest; I am not exactly skilled in self-promotion. In fact, I’m the complete opposite of an entrepreneur. But I do honestly respect and appreciate peer reviews and feedback from readers . Not being able to talk to you all is bumming me out hard, and I realize that to only way to do better is to try something else.
I’m working on a Discord Server for Temperantia Chronicles, so that we can build and grow our community. I honestly didn’t want to ask you all to hop over to Royal Road.

Yo! What's up? Name's Josh and I'm new-ish to World Anvil.
I'm currently working on 3 5e D&D campaigns using this website using ideas from different video games, books and movies.
I looked high and low for source/homebrew materials so I could run campaigns based on these kinds of things, but alas, my searching was unsuccessful, so I figured I'd make them myself.
The campaigns I'm currently working on are:
- "The Sinking City: Whispers of the Deep." A campaign loosely based on the Frogwares game "The Sinking City" and mixed with aspects and themes from throughout the Lovecraftian Mythos. Occasionally I'll use materials from Sandy Petersen's Cthulhu Mythos to aid in fleshing this campaign out. (75% Complete)
- "For The Company". A campaign based on the video game "Lethal Company" complete with fan content, and my own personal touch of homebrew. (75% Complete)
- And lastly, "Tales from the Golden Maze". A Backrooms and SCP themed campaign using an Unrestricted Canon for both universes. (25% Complete)
I'm really excited to see these campaigns finished and hopefully once I'm done I can put them up for y'all to use as well, especially since I'll have to put them up for free because I don't feel like working around copyright restrictions and royalties.
I'm welcome to any and all ideas for how to implement these worlds and ideas for additions!

Hey all,
I've had a silent month, as we were visiting family for the first half of July and I've had a health crash for the other half.
Summer Camp was not an option for me this year, but I do have a new chapter of The Cleansing of Zykyrn Pilkarrz out now.
It's mostly about food. But even as Vazkyr falls in love with the Bluefish Pastry, her overtired mind is trying to tell her that it's not just about food.

The Lucian Faith within my world of Ezre is one of my FAVORITE things I haven't written about yet - mainly because of how weird religion works in my world.
So, the thing is, there are no gods - but there are these animistic spirits called DIUM, check them out here - Dium who exist and are the manifestation of all the natural processes of the world and thus, magic is just the mortal manipulation of these processes by making deals with the spirits. So! How does faith work with that?
Well, they are teachers - scholars and such - who help ensure that the big spirit from another plane of existence doesn't scam you out of anything important, like your life or free will of that 20$ that gram-gram gave you for christmas. All the important things in life.

Inspired by my experience living with PCOS, The Hollowing explores a silent, incurable affliction through a fantasy lens — one that reshapes bodies, futures, and identities.
It weaves together storytelling, worldbuilding, and illustration to give voice to what often goes unseen.
I’ve been working on this quietly for some time. The art took several attempts before it finally felt like it was saying what I needed it to.
This also became an exercise in writing more deeply for one of the characters in the novel I’m working on — grounding their experience in something real.

I am Barbarossa Sparklebeard and I am here to announce my entry into WorldAnvil Summercamp '25! After a stressful university graduation - and six years at University - I am ready to get back in the saddle! I am excited and pumped to try my hand at worldbuilding once more!
Summer Camp has always been a fun time, but last year I was in a rut and I broke my Pure Diamond Run! Sadness abound! Not this year though, this year I am back and ready than ever! Diamond or Die-amond Trying! We can do this especially since I have the amazing Moonflower-Writing helping me out.

Having had medical aid, Kanda-Nor is refreshed and ready for research. Having slept in a chair in the medical wing, Vazkyr... is not.
But a stressful 23 hours gives way at last. If only they could figure out how to say goodbye.

I've also started to do a bit more sketching to add to my writing (hence the cover). My hand sketches always seems to look worse after a camera has had its say, but I know I'm no famous illustrator either!

My task to convert chapters of The Cleansing to Manuscript format is continuing. Tonight I've published Chapters 5 and 6.
In one chapter a delivery brings a sign of hope. In the next chapter, a totally different delivery threatens despair.
It's not Prose vs Manuscript
Manuscript and Article is not an either/or. I am leaving the Prose Series as it is, but using manuscripts to let you read whichever way is the most comfortable for you.

Caemothas is Alive – New Tectonic & Ley Line Maps!
After a lot of work, I’ve finally finished two major layers of the world map:
Tectonic Plate Maps – Showing oceanic and continental plates, including fault types and microplates.
Ley Line Overlay – Highlighting the world’s magical energy network, with glowing paths for healthy and scarred ley lines.
These maps shape the geography, magic, and even the history of Caemothas—tying into volcanoes, arcane nexuses, and lost civilizations.

Well, I live on the eastern edge of LA County, and I'm watching the city burn and wondering if the winds will spark a fire where I live. We knew it was going to be a bad fire season, as California had the atmospheric river dumping a lot of water earlier in the year, which made the foliage grow, which would dry out and become tinder later on. I'm hoping friends stay safe and a spark doesn't take root near us (and yes, the county's accidental sending of the evacuation warning scared the shit out of me and my honey).
Our firefighters are battling not only fire, but Santa Ana winds, and those are supposed to pick up again this weekend. Volunteers from other countries are here to help (Mexico, Canada) and I'm grateful to them all.
This is a strange time, as I'm writing about the effects of a fire/flood in Evenacht. It's a strange time, as Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler predicted just this (she was born and raised in Altadena, the first place the Eaton Fire ravaged). Stories, books, realities combine.

I need to preface this with: I am asking for art, however I will not consider any offers w/ Artificial Intelligence help. Sorry, I don't roll that way.
I really need help with architecture. I don't do good drawing buildings, I mostly draw people. My culture's architecture is kinda a mix of Western-ish style and Japanese styles of architecture. I don't need anything fancy, I'd accept sketches and be happy (might even want to practice coloring and lining if I'm allowed to <3 ). I'd be willing to either exchange some money or do an art trade. I just want to have a visual to help me when describing the architecture and also to add to my Endinsian article.

End of October....
October may have seemed quiet for me, I was busy writing and adding to my world, Work on the manuscript is still going. I have to pause and answer many questions about aspects I hadn't considered, such as larger world issues that my story should focus on outside of my characters, as well as how the magic system works. I did not have much time to work on #Spooktober I only completed two prompts. I debating on starting a world for just archiving stories I write about the characters I play in other games, or may releasing their stories in chapter format with a manuscript.
In my campaign, one guild of players accidentally—allegedly—released a demon into part of the world, which may or may not have eaten a few villages and destroyed half a keep in the Craglands. They are currently on their way to trial with the Dwarven Sun King Thorin Dankil. The other guild has just started the quest for the Thirteen Treasures to potentially cleanse the world of Umbral water. They received a guild building expansion.

It's been about two weeks since Inarora's Excursion has come into the world! I've been taking a long social media hiatus because I got extremely burned out from doing promos, and then also social media has a bad tendency (which, is by design) to feed into a lot of your insecurities and imposter syndrome, and it made things a lot worse for me. Which sucks, because I've been wanting to post more for Inarora's Excursion across my socials, but I haven't been able to.
So, I haven't really done many articles the past month or two. I've been hyperfixated on writing my Naruto fanfiction and I've been drawing and working. A lot. My reading is suffering a bit lol. Happy Caturday my fellow Animals! I have been thinking of creating products of my world to sell them to fund some investments in better equipment for my worldbuilding, however, I have no idea how to market products for a story that has not yet been written and published. I am basically trying to get people interested in the story I am working on. I have some general ideas on what I could offer, such as a " WildZoo: Bundle" ... but what would have to be in that bundle to attract potential readers?
I am an artist first than a writer, and im slow playing the writing as rushing has caused me to back peddle in some of the design of the characters. Keke, as you have noticed, changed a bit. The actual story demanded it... and when worldbuilding.... it matters.
So I will be showcasing a few designs of what I have already started for these "Wild bundles" I will showcase them over the next month, and if you have any suggestions please let me know!!! Also here is some new delicious stuff!

PHEW, there are 13 more days until the release of my MG/YA book, Inarora's Excursion and I feel like I'm losing my mind lmao. I'm scrambling for content, trying to make content on Bsky and TikTok and phew some days I just want to curl up and cry LOL.
Anyway, I did some editing of articles last week. I think it was Seri, Dahlnen, and then I made a new article: with the startings of my international relations. I didn't do it before because it wasn't QUITE necessary but as I work on book 2, I'm realizing: oof I have a LOT of international relations that is needed. And I'm even citing these fckers. Granted I haven't found it necessary to cite in articles YET but I have the citations made and ready. (Tell me you graduated college with research and citations beaten into you WITHOUT TELLING ME).

Seraph's Weekly Update!
Weekly updates! Been trudging along with Inarora 2. Trying to get back into the groove after being knocked off it badly a bit ago. I'm doing pretty good, averaging about 400 something words a day. Er...at least just the past few days it's been my average. I'm gonna try to focus more on it this week.
Did one article that I needed to do anyway, tbh, and I honestly love the route he took as I began characterizing him. Ei'rah al-Kanneyeh is loosely based off my poor interpretation of a former friend's character, which they complained massively about, so I decided, "Well I like my interpretation, so fine I'll take my interpretation and go since they don't like it." And the way Ei'rah bloomed as I wrote out his story was amazing, not gonna lie. Also, finally, I have a character with a beard LOL. That was desperately needed lmao.

So last week I successfully got my summer camp reading all done, faster than I expected but thankfully done and out of the way.
Summer Reading Challenge
At the end of it, I definitely did use it for some self-promo. Sorry, kinda not sorry. LOL.
I think soon, I'm going to work on more character profiles because I will need them in my next book or two. I especially need to work on Inarora's cousins and Priwen and Damyien more. I need to flesh these disasters out a little more.
In other news, right now my book is still set to release the 22nd of next month. That's almost a month away! Phew, that's kinda scary if you ask me. I'm THIS close to being a published author and it's creeping up so fast on me. I'm a little panicky, not gonna even lie, but I'll live. I'm always panicky LMAO.

I am now on vacation for two weeks (except for reading the SC articles for the prompt I sponsored. I'm still doing that!). Greenglimmer will return on Sept 6, and Broken Dulcet will return on Sept 13. Maybe I should have waited and wrote about the spooky theater then. Ah well.
I haven't taken a break since Nov-Dec of 2023, when I took a month off before Greenglimmer and Broken Dulcet began. But after writing 50K during Summer Camp (counting articles and serial chapters but not CSS code) I am in need of a breather. So breathe I shall.
I will not be taking bets on how many days I can stay idle before I pick up a pen and make some digital art, or type a bit on my Wellspring WIP. I have too much of a guilty conscience. I'll probably put up my revamp of my Lapis of Nicodem homepage, but I won't do that until after SC judging because I'm terrified I'll accidentally update articles.
Who knows. Maybe I'll just kick back and play some more Tears of the Kingdom (my honey got me the 9 disc, full soundtrack to the game in Japan. Very excited to listen to it all). Or maybe I'll play around with Medieval sampler from Teenage Engineering. It's my early birthday present, and since it has samples of medieval instruments (and a dragon!) it's right up my alley.

Inarora's Excursion Release Date and Info!
So I've been talking occasionally here about my debut novel, Inarora's Excursion. This book has been 7 years in the making, where I didn't even look at it for about 3-4 years, and I can finally publish it! I'm genuinely very happy about it. I know this site is more about world building than for promotion but I still wanted to make a post. I won't post daily like I do on my socials, but maybe once a week here as a reminder and to update on how it's going.
So for right now, the release date is September 22, 2024! I'm getting it set up on IngramSpark (and having a conniption fit every single day). Working on getting it ready for pre-order, but sadly I've been fighting with Ingram all week about the cover template and I haven't had much luck.

Last bit of articles AND good news!
I successfully did 16 articles this year! I was worried I wouldn't and then I just decided on a wildcard and said 'fuck it, let's go'. I would have done one sooner than last minute, but it's been an extremely rough week.
However, before I go into my last articles, I want to share good news! I am setting the date for publishing Inarora's Excursion to be September 22, 2024. So I'm going to be a published author in a little over a month and a half! I'll make a few other posts about it later on.
Anyway, last few articles hath arrived! I do apologize, I don't have much to really say about any of these articles but I am trying lol.
This was kind of inspired by the knowledge that we COULD have a cavity vaccine but they won't let it happen. Which honestly, I could use that vaccine but...anyway...here's the Anti-Cavity Salve LOL.
Illusion Tags. I'm sorry, not sorry, but they were inspired by Naruto. I just thought it was a neat idea. And ofc I took my own creative liberties.
Last one, made with love or hate. Idk, I just threw this together. But it is a very interesting concept so I figured, why the hell not?

Arenai Taisha Shrine Probably one of my favorite articles that I didn't know I needed? Because this would make a great spot for Seri to take Inarora in a later story honestly, even as a short story. Number Eleven done today!
Phew I'm almost done. I have five more articles to write and I gotta think about which ones I am gonna do.
Anyway, here are the three I've gotten done since the last time I posted:
I dunno what to say about this one honestly. This guy probably never makes an appearance in my book LOL.
This one might be my favorite for the sheer fact that this myth exists about my MC, Inarora, who literally wouldn't even hurt a fly. She is just the sweetest person ever and loves cuddling with her father(s and mom). She feels awful when she accidentally hurts a bug or animal, or even a plant! Shit, she feels awful when she knocks a plushie off her bed because she can't sleep normally. So it's funny that this myth even exists and literally every person who knows her is like, "LOL what?"
Lastly this is actually an article I've procrastinated on writing because I just didn't feel like it/I didn't feel like I had the right inspiration for it yet. But this is such a big thing because this is what killed the dragons that it needed to get written. So yippee! I got that done finally.
And I will work out the last five articles at some point soon. I'll get there. Eventually.

Doing these on weekends and telework days are honestly the best days for me lol. But ayo I got two of these bad boys down.
These guys...I really don't know. I just bullshitted it and sprayed with febreeze. Inspired by the fox spirits in east Asian culture, with a twist of my own (I hope it's like that anyway). Not my finest work but hey I wrote something.
This one kinda became a reference to like...The Bronx with a mix of Portsmouth, Virginia somehow. (I'm a Virginian don't judge me). Specifically, the casino is a reference to good ol' P-Town. No. I don't like that casino. What was your first clue? And I dunno. I guess it also has elements from other areas of the country too. Idk fully.
So I uh. Had some extra spoons for worldbuilding today. (I may or may not have been procrastinating draft 1.5 of my novel). Yippee

Fourth Article Down!
Phew! I have four articles down. I was lucky enough not to have to go out today so I decided, why not make article number four? Hopefully tomorrow and Tuesday will also involve some article writing. I always need an excuse to keep worldbuilding lmaoooooo.

In the book, I often talk about how the Naa'ran humans took over their country, so I'm actually glad I had to write this because I needed to have a good reference point for this. Milana I don't have much to say about. I wrote this one because of Rhanalan and the strife that happened, and I did realize they needed a safe zone. Or at least one they thought was safe. I don't think I expected to write it the way I did but I think I enjoyed how it came out. Okay this one was full bushittery and me drawing inspo from Luray Caverns in my home state of Virginia. Honestly, I should go one day. It's just unfortunately very much out of the way for me. But one day, I'll visit the place that inspired this article. I actually reference this festival in my first book towards the end but I didn't go into much detail. However, I wrote a short story with my bestie that did, in fact, feature this. I was stuck at first because I didn't know what to do. It's not quite a comfort thing but it is tradition, and it did start as a way to comfort the people of the country.
So I think I'm doing great and having a lot of fun this year lol.
